Spike Maynard: True Rugby Gentleman

Hello Friends and Fellow Antediluvians,

It is with a heavy heart that we advise you that Spike Maynard died suddenly from a stroke on September 5th.

Spike was a true rugby gentleman, who was friend to all. His generous caring nature touched many people, and he will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife Cathy, and a son and daughter, who we send our deepest condolences.

Spike was a regular weekly player at the Fun Runs, and at the club games and tours over the years. He was just at the August 28th Fun Run, fielding , passing and running the rugby ball with his own unique style.

He was a charter member of the Antediluvians RFC team in 2005 that won the World Masters Bronze medal. Spike joined the Druids RFC in the 1980’s, touring to his home country Australia and visiting New Zealand on the 1989 club tour. He played some representative rugby in Australia and Canada, and toured with select Edmonton rugby teams around North America.

He started the successful Harvest Vintage company importing beer, wine and spirits. He was a very knowledgeable connoisseur. Spike often brought a cooler of some of his unique beverages for after the Fun Runs, and was very generous in many ways to the Antediluvians RFC and the rugby community.

Shine on Spike.

Details of Spike’s Celebration of Life will be provided when we receive them.
